13 days, 7 Teams ... #BISSSentrum

13 days. 7 teams. One decision away from nuclear war.

This week in MYP3 Individuals & Societies, year 9 students lived the Cuban Missile Crisis. Each student took on a role within the US, USSR, Cuba, UN, Military leaders, or Media. They worked with primary sources, motivations, suspicions, and alliances as the crisis unfolded over five rounds.

The result this year was...the Soviet submarine B-59 decided to launch its nuclear torpedo at US ships! In the chaotic aftermath, students representing both superpower nations rallied to set up an emergency UN summit and cut through the misinformation, which ended with both sides signing a contract for UN-negotiated missile withdrawal from Cuba and Turkey.

The real learning came in the reflections around how hard it is to get reliable information, how personalities and power shape decisions, and how frustrating (and human) high-stakes decision-making really is! Inquiry-based learning in action!
