Language in the PYP

The language of instruction in our curriculum is English. Children also learn Norwegian.

Language is a core subject in the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and is designed to develop students' communication skills across various modes of language.

Key Components:

  1. Reading: Encouraging students to read a variety of texts to enhance comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking.
  2. Writing: Developing skills in writing for different purposes and audiences, including narrative, informational, and persuasive texts.
  3. Speaking: Fostering effective oral communication skills through discussions, presentations, and storytelling.
  4. Listening: Enhancing the ability to listen actively and critically to understand and respond to others.
  5. Viewing and Presenting: Understanding and creating visual and multimedia texts, such as videos, posters, and digital presentations.

Goals:

  • Helping students learn additional languages to promote multilingualism and cultural understanding.

  • Exploring literature to appreciate different genres, authors, and cultural perspectives.

  • Using language in meaningful contexts to connect with real-world experiences and inquiries.

Approach:

  • Inquiry-Based Learning: Encouraging students to ask questions, conduct research, and explore language through inquiry.
  • Transdisciplinary Integration: Integrating language learning with other subject areas to create a cohesive learning experience.
  • Learner Profile Development: Promoting attributes such as being communicators, thinkers, and open-minded individuals.

The aim is to cultivate a love for language and literature while equipping students with the skills to communicate effectively and confidently in a global context.
