Communication, Language and Text
At our preschool, we understand that language and communication are fundamental to a child’s development. We believe that play-based learning offers the perfect environment for children to develop these essential skills, as it encourages them to actively engage with their peers and educators through meaningful social interactions. Through structured and unstructured play opportunities, children learn to express their thoughts, emotions, and ideas, while refining their ability to listen and respond effectively.
Through scaffolded play, where educators provide support and guidance, our children are encouraged to expand their communication abilities. They gain confidence in expressing themselves, whether verbally or nonverbally, and develop a deeper understanding of how communication works in different contexts. Whether they are telling stories, asking questions, or engaging in imaginative role-playing, our children are empowered to express their thoughts and feelings in diverse ways.
In addition to verbal expression, our children are also encouraged to communicate through movement. By responding to music, both traditional and contemporary, dance, and storytelling, they broaden their understanding of how people express ideas and emotions across cultures and time. These activities enhance their creativity and foster a deeper connection to the world around them.
Our skilled educators recognise the importance of supporting children’s language development in multiple ways. They will nurture the maintenance of home languages and cultural traditions, ensuring that each child’s unique background is respected and celebrated. At the same time, we expose children to different languages and dialects within our BISS Community, encouraging an appreciation of linguistic diversity. This approach not only helps children gain an awareness of the various languages spoken around them but also fosters an inclusive environment where all forms of communication are valued and respected.
By prioritising language development and communication in these rich and dynamic ways, we help children develop the tools they need to become confident, articulate individuals who can engage thoughtfully with the world and with others.
