Arts

Key Components of the Program

The MYP Arts curriculum fosters creativity, self-expression, and cultural awareness through the study of Music and Visual Arts. Students explore a variety of artistic techniques, mediums, and styles while developing critical thinking and reflective skills. Through both practical and theoretical components, the program encourages students to experiment, take risks, and communicate ideas in innovative ways.

Goals of the Program in the Subject

The program aims to cultivate students' artistic confidence and appreciation for the role of the arts in society. It nurtures creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration while encouraging students to develop their own artistic identity. By analysing and creating art, students gain a deeper understanding of different cultural perspectives and historical contexts. The program also helps build resilience, adaptability, and an open-minded approach to artistic expression.

Approach to Teaching the Subject

The Arts in the MYP is taught through an inquiry-based, hands-on approach that allows students to engage in both the creative process and critical reflection. In Music, students develop technical skills, composition abilities, and an understanding of musical styles and history. In Visual Arts, they explore a range of materials and techniques, including drawing, painting, sculpture, and digital media. Lessons incorporate collaboration, experimentation, and performance or exhibition opportunities to enhance artistic learning.

Elective Pathways in MYP 4 and 5

In MYP 4 and 5, students have the opportunity to specialize by choosing either Music or Visual Arts as their primary focus for the final two years of the program. This elective structure allows for deeper engagement and skill development in their chosen discipline while continuing to refine their creative expression, critical analysis, and artistic techniques.
