The Science core subject area in the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is designed to foster curiosity and a deep understanding of the natural world. Here's an overview:

Key Components:

  1. Living Things: Exploring the characteristics, systems, and processes of living organisms, including humans, animals, and plants.
  2. Earth and Space: Investigating the Earth's structure, natural phenomena, and the universe beyond our planet.
  3. Materials and Matter: Understanding the properties, behaviors, and uses of different materials and substances.
  4. Forces and Energy: Examining the principles of forces, motion, and energy, and how they interact in the physical world.

Goals:

  • Conceptual Understanding: Developing a solid grasp of scientific concepts and principles.
  • Inquiry Skills: Encouraging students to ask questions, conduct experiments, and engage in scientific investigations.
  • Critical Thinking: Promoting analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Environmental Awareness: Fostering an understanding of environmental issues and the importance of sustainability.

Approach:

  • Inquiry-Based Learning: Engaging students in hands-on activities, experiments, and research projects to explore scientific concepts.
  • Transdisciplinary Integration: Connecting science with other subject areas to provide a comprehensive learning experience.
  • Real-World Application: Relating scientific concepts to everyday life and global issues to make learning relevant and meaningful.

The aim is to inspire a love for science and equip students with the skills to think scientifically and understand the world around them.
