The Primary Years Department, at BISS Gausel is a fun, vibrant and stimulating learning community. We aim to offer a balanced curriculum that promotes the acquisition of key skills through inquiry based learning. We work hard to create a very special learning experience for our primary aged students.
The Primary Years Department has 6 year groups, PYP 1 through to PYP 6. Within each year group there are 2 classes.
The curriculum we follow is the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). Subjects - for example science, humanities, arts - are integrated into our units of inquiry (UOI) to enable skills to be taught in context.
Students in PYP5 and PYP6 have their own Microsoft surface tablet and keyboard to support their learning. These devices allow flexibility in use and were chosen to enhance and support the inquiry based learning in the PYP. Students in PYP1 - 4 have 1:2 access of the same devices.
English and Maths are also integrated into the UOI though discreet lessons may also be delivered in order to teach specific skills. The backbone of the English and Maths Scope and Sequence at BISS Gausel is a combination of the IB PYP phase recommendations, as well as certain skills from the English National Curriculum.
The outdoors is an important part of our PYP and we are lucky to have the forested hilltops of Gausel and the Gansdfjord a short walk away. Children have weekly outdoor education lessons whatever the weather and the outdoors is very much an extension of their classrooms.
