Our History Gausel
The British School of Stavanger was founded in 1977 and over the years has developed into a truly international school.
The school was initially established to educate the children of the first North Sea oil workers in the area, but it quickly grew, and moved to its current premises in 1981. The location of the school has proved to be one of its greatest assets. Surrounded by the forested hilltops of Gausel, the once rural location is now a pleasant residential area looking across the Gandsfjord towards the neighbouring mountains. Today, with an enrolment of 500 students representing more than 50 nationalities, the school is culturally rich and diverse
Although this is a 'British' school, it is the international aspect that we particularly value ...... the experiences and friendships which they gain in their multi-national and multi-cultural classrooms are priceless.
The original British School was an extended primary school, catering for students aged between 5 and 13 years. The independently run International Pre-School occupied classrooms on the same premises.
Over the next twenty years the school began to welcome students from ever more diverse countries and in 2004 became the British International School of Stavanger. The International Pre-School was incorporated in 2008.
In 2007 a refurbishment of the school added additional classrooms to meet the needs of a growing school population. At the same time the school made the decision to extend provision to include a secondary school. As part of that development, the school began incorporating the International Baccalaureate Programmes (IB) into the curriculum, commencing with the IB Middle Years Programme. The IB Primary Years Programme was introduced in 2013. In 2015, additional premises were acquired to accommodate the IB Diploma and IB Careers-Related Programme for our Sixth Form College students.
In 2016 the British International School of Stavanger became the first school in Scandinavia with accreditation to offer all four IB programmes.
The British International School is now proud to be an IBO World School.
The school maintains close links with its British roots, promoting British values and an ethos which places democracy and the rights of the individual at the heart of its practice.
The school enjoys engaging in international student activities, as well as professional development opportunities for its staff organised by our British partners. Throughout its history the school has been a proactive member of the Council of British International Schools (COBIS) family.
