What is the PYP?

BISS Gausel Primary School offers the PYP.

The PYP stands for the Primary Years Programme. It is a program offered by the International Baccalaureate (IB) for students aged 3 to 12.

The PYP aims to nurture curious, knowledgeable, and caring young people who are prepared to make a positive impact on the world.

It is a framework for learning that focuses on developing the whole child - academically, socially, emotionally, and culturally.  What makes the PYP special is -

  • Inquiry-based learning: Children are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas, and develop their own understanding of the world through investigation and discovery.
  • Transdisciplinary themes: Learning isn't confined to separate subjects. Instead, it's organized around big, interconnected ideas that relate to the real world.
  • International mindedness: The PYP fosters a sense of global citizenship, encouraging students to be open-minded and respectful of different cultures.
  • Development of the whole child: The program focuses not just on academics, but also on the students' social, emotional, and physical well-being.

What is the MYP?

BISS Gausel Secondary School offers the MYP

The MYP stands for the Middle Years Programme. It is a program offered by the International Baccalaureate (IB), designed for students aged 11 to 16. As part of the IB Continuum, it is the bridge between the PYP (for younger learners) and the Diploma Programme (for older students).

The MYP helps students become active learners, responsible citizens, and lifelong learners, preparing them for the Diploma Programme or other pathways after secondary school such as VGS in the Norwegian Edcuation system.

  • Building on the PYP: It takes the foundations laid in the PYP and helps students develop even stronger skills in inquiry, critical thinking, and communication.
  • Eight subject groups: Students explore a broad range of subjects, including languages, humanities, sciences, mathematics, arts, and physical education. This helps them develop a well-rounded education.
  • Global contexts: Learning is connected to real-world issues and global challenges, encouraging students to become internationally minded.
  • Approaches to learning (ATL): The MYP focuses on developing essential skills that students need to succeed in their studies and beyond, like thinking, communication, social, self-management, and research skills.
  • Personal Project: A key part of the MYP is the Personal Project, where students independently research, create, and reflect on a topic of their choice. It's a fantastic opportunity for them to showcase their learning and passion.
