English
A thorough knowledge of English, both formal and informal, is necessary for students to communicate effectively throughout the curriculum.
Students are taught and encouraged to use language as a vehicle for thought, creativity, reflection, learning and self-expression. They are encouraged to respond to a variety of texts both modern and classic, and to consider the role of literature both culturally and historically. They develop the skills involved in speaking, listening, reading, writing and viewing in a variety of contexts.
The study of English has a double role to play.
1. It provides the basic tool of communication by:
- enabling efficient learning and practice of other subjects within the school
- developing social contacts
- encouraging self expression.
2. It provides the study of a broad variety of forms of expression through language by:
-
fulfilling culural and intercultural roles
-
influencing the personal, moral and spiritual development of the student through literature
-
deepening the student’s understanding of human nature and values.
