Norwegian

Norwegian is taught to native and non-native speakers at the British International School of Stavanger, from Year 1 throughout the school. It is a great chance to learn some of the language and the culture the children live in.

Norwegian is taught as a formal language for native speakers and at a beginner’s level for non-native speakers from year 3. The main areas of learning will develop around reading, speaking, listening and writing.

Year 1 & 2
We have lots of fun learning how to sing Norwegian songs, rhymes and talk about things such as colours, clothes, my family, food, shapes, animals, etc.  We build on what we have learnt in Year 2 and we talk about Norwegian traditions at Christmas, May 17th , weather, seasons, simple sentences in Norwegian, etc.

Year 3 - 6 (Non Norwegian students)
We learn about time, colours, transport, houses, family, food, Norwegian fairytales, some Norwegian grammar, etc.

Formal Norwegian, Year 3 - 6
We follow the Norwegian curriculum (Kunnskapsløftet) as closely as possible including grammar, comprehension work, Norwegian literature history, different genres, etc.
