Educational Support
English as an Additional Language
The school is pleased to introduce its most recently established class for EAL pupils within the infant department.
Groups are kept small at around 12 children from Key Stage 1 classes for 3 mornings sessions a week. Our bright and spacious classroom is designed to promote the active learning of English through a wide range of activities.
The EAL programme is designed to encourage the development of English language skills whilst simultaneously covering topics within the Key Stage 1 curriculum to enable full integration into the mainstream teaching programme.
Some of the topics covered include Ourselves, Friends, Colours, Shapes, Counting and Basic Number Operations, the Calendar and the Weather. The programme stresses phonic awareness and letter formation.
everal sessions are based upon stories, songs and class discussions. The programme encourages English speaking and listening skills. Role play activities as well as Show and Tell sessions promote language development and self confidence whilst widening English vocabulary and building self-esteem.
Self expression through a variety of art work is also encouraged. The programme provides a wide range of specialised EAL software. Reading takes place in both individual and class settings using strong visual clues for early literacy development.
Whilst promoting the development of English as an additional language, each student's own native language is acknowledged and appreciated.
On-going individual monitoring of progress and regular assessments, along with consultation with teachers and parents, help determine when the supplemental EAL sessions are no longer required for individual children and allow for a return to mainstream teaching.
Special Education Needs (SEN)
The school makes provision for supporting pupils who may have, or develop an educational special need. Being proactive in the identification of special needs and moving swiftly to provide focused intervention ensures that individual pupils are provided with every opportunity to maximise their potential.
The school offers the following SEN intervention:
- Early Literacy Support (Pupils in Year 1 from the Spring Term onwards)
- Additional Literacy Support (Pupils in Years 3 & 4 )
- Numeracy Recovery Support (Pupils from Year 1 onwards)
- Further Literacy Support (Pupils in Year 5 upwards)
- Emotional, Behavioural & Social Support Programmes (Year 1 upwards)
Intervention may be delivered in small groups or as ‘one to one’ teaching for several periods each week and for specified periods as laid down in Individual Education Plans. Where the above support fails to bring about significant improvements parents are advised to consult an Educational Psychologist for further advice.
